Tragedy struck a beloved Midtown Atlanta bar early Saturday morning as flames engulfed a room at Blake's on the Park, a staple of the city's LGBTQ+ community. According to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, the fire, reported around 6 a.m., was contained primarily to a back room and did not spread further. The cause remains under investigation.
The bar, noted for its vibrant drag shows and karaoke nights, has been a prominent fixture in Atlanta's nightlife since its 1988 inception. The impact of the fire comes just as the city is ramping up to celebrate Pride Month, a sentimental time for the community. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that one employee was present during the incident; however, they were able to safely evacuate without injury.
Speaking to FOX 5 Atlanta, Anaré Holmes from the Atlanta Fire Department expressed the significance of the venue to locals, saying, "With this being one of the most iconic landmark nightclubs in LGBTQ nightlife, it means a lot to people." Despite the damage, staff are optimistic about the bar's swift recovery, with most of the damage reportedly contained to the second floor.
Regulars of Blake's were shocked by the news. "The place was packed, and it was really crammed and a good time, as always. So it was really interesting to hear that it was actually on fire this morning," Robin Barten told FOX 5 Atlanta. In a show of the establishment's importance to the heartbeat of the area, Rory Harper, also a regular, added, "I only moved here a year ago and one of the first places I heard about to come to was Blake’s. So I feel like if we didn't have it, it would be such a huge loss to the community."
Emergency officials currently do not believe the fire was the result of nefarious intent. "I think it was just some kind of mishap inside. I don’t think it was arson or that anyone set the place on fire," Blake's manager Rod Llaneza expressed in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First. As the investigation into the cause of the fire proceeds, the community holds its breath in hopes that Blake's will soon rekindle its role as a beacon of celebration and solidarity.
