Richard Globensky, 39, of Georgia, stood before a judge in Chicago federal court on Wednesday, confessing to a charge of interstate transport of stolen goods with a simple declaration, "I plead guilty," as reported by WABE.
The elaborate scheme that spanned over a decade saw Globensky pilfer Augusta National's prized possessions, including coveted green jackets and vintage Masters tickets, shifting them through a web of deceit down to sellers in Florida who fetched a high price online and lining his pockets with over $5 million dollars while doing so, as federal prosecutors lay out. Steering clear of Augusta National's rigorous inventory checks Globensky meticulously smuggled small batches at a time, avoiding detection and spiraling to a total haul that prosecutors value in excess of $3 million.
Globensky, who has been an employee since 2007, now faces sentencing on October 29, where he may see up to 10 years behind bars; however, sentencing guidelines suggest a more likely term of near two years. In light of his guilty plea, the former warehouse assistant has been instructed to submit a $1.5 million cashier’s check to the government within mere days. As part of the proceedings in court, Globensky's lips remained sealed to reporters, and his attorney, Thomas Church, offered no comment beyond noting the legal proceedings in Chicago, necessitated by the recovery of some stolen items in the area.
