A former Lithia Springs High School coach is facing charges of sexually assaulting a student, causing a stir in the local community and prompting serious concerns over student safety. Kerry Hood, 47, a former teacher and girls’ track and field coach, was denied bond and labelled a "risk to society" following allegations of sexual misconduct that were reported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on May 27. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, incidents took place on school grounds and various other locations, including outside the state.
The victim, whose identity remains confidential, detailed to authorities that the assaults occurred while they were a student at the high school. Allegations suggest the inappropriate conduct spanned at least six months, beginning on Nov. 23, as revealed during a court session where Hood's bond was denied. The former coach, who is also known for his role as the offensive coach for the school's football team, turned himself in on May 29, Hood's prior record was noted in court as clean, with no previous felonies, and his strong community ties to the metro Atlanta area were highlighted by his defense.
In response to the disturbing situation, parents and former students expressed their shock and concern. "Very disturbing, that's sickening. Why are you even interested in a child?" Labresha Gray, the parent of a tenth-grade student told FOX 5 Atlanta, questioning the broken trust between educators and families. Additionally, a former football player of Hood's and recent graduate Ryan Samples expressed to 11Alive his disbelief and concern for possible unknown victims: "It hurts me. Nobody should ever have to go through this."
Following the arrest, Hood has been terminated from the Douglas County school system. Officials from the district and DeKalb County, where Hood had been offered a position as a football coach, have since issued statements. Douglas County School affirmed that safety was a paramount concern and expressed their solidarity with the victim and their family as per their statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. Similarly, a spokesperson for DeKalb County School District, speaking to the decision not to employ Hood, emphasized the district's commitment to student safety, "DCSD is aware of the matter involving Mr. Kerry Hood," the spokesperson said, "DCSD does not intend to proceed with the employment of Mr. Hood."
The incident has set off an examination of the mechanisms in place to protect students from predatory behavior and ensure the safety of young individuals within educational institutions. As the legal proceedings continue, the community waits for further details and possible revelations regarding the scope of the accused's misconduct.
