The initiative to adopt the eastern bluebird took flight after Fort Worth ISD students, in conjunction with local citizens, took to deeply analyze data and engage in community outreach. The bird stands not only for Texan grit and friendliness but also for peace and joy, epitomizing the vibrant spirit of the city. Michael Perez, a natural scientist supervisor at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge, said, "Like our city, the eastern bluebird can be viewed as resilient." The species has bounced back from habitat loss and the threat of invasive species to flourish once again in the region, according to the City of Fort Worth.
Perez also emphasized the abundance of eastern bluebirds throughout Fort Worth, with frequent sightings near natural spaces and parks. Their presence is particularly beneficial for local agriculture, as they feed on insects that could otherwise negatively impact farming and the local ecosystem.
Rocco Williams, the FWISD’s K-12 science curriculum coordinator, expressed his excitement about the students' involvement in this civic project: "I’m excited thinking about how our students were able to participate in a truly unique opportunity to use their scientific thinking skills to make history in our community." According to the City of Fort Worth, the project allowed students to delve into research, data collection, and critical scientific processes, providing a hands-on approach to learning.
