A neighborhood dispute escalated into a tense standoff on Thursday, leading to a man being taken into custody after he allegedly threatened a neighbor with a firearm in Fremont. Michigan State Police responded to the incident, which began in the early hours of the morning at a residence on Pine Street. As reported by WOODTV, the 40-year-old man then retreated into his house after the confrontation, prompting hours of negotiations over the phone.
Authorities were forced to adopt extreme measures, successfully convincing the armed man to surrender peacefully after deploying a gas canister into his home. According to Newaygo County Sheriff Bob Mendham, negotiation efforts had broken down, and it was clear the suspect did not initially want to exit the home. "So if we can cause a little discomfort and convince him to come out peacefully, that's the best option," Mendham said, per WZZM13.
The situation prompted local authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for residents in the surrounding area, spanning from S Division Street to S Merchant Street and from Cedar Street to E Maple Street. The order remained in effect for several hours, affecting the daily routine of the community as Fremont Public Schools was also put on a two-hour delay before life in the town returned to normalcy.
Fremont Police Chief Rodwell expressed gratitude to the community for their patience while the negotiations with the barricaded man unfolded. "Additional thanks to the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office, Newaygo County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team, Life EMS, Newaygo County Central dispatch, Newaygo County Emergency Manager, and Michigan State Police for their assistance during this investigation," Chief Rodwell said, as reported by 9and10news. The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine if there were any prior issues between the suspect and his neighbor.
