A fatal showdown unfolded on the backroads of Carroll County when a Georgia trooper was forced to fire his weapon at a suspect, bringing a high-speed chase to a deadly halt. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently probing the incident that occurred in Roopville after deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office were hot on the heels of complaints regarding a series of mail thefts.
According to a statement from the GBI, at around 3:00 p.m., officers attempted to pull over Jason Scott Fletcher, 51, of Hogansville, but he wasn't about to give in easily. Fletcher led the deputies on a chase, evidently determined to not be caught, prompting a response from the Georgia State Patrol.
The encounter escalated when a trooper tried to strategically place stop sticks at the intersection of Highway 5 and Banks Circle in a desperate attempt to end the pursuit. Fletcher, in what can only be described as a maneuver to avoid capture or perhaps in a panic, swerved his vehicle toward the trooper. In response, the trooper discharged his firearm, hitting Fletcher.
First responders rendered aid at the scene, but the gravity of Fletcher’s injuries was too severe. He was quickly transported to Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton where he later succumbed. The GBI assures that the investigation is both "active and ongoing," urging anyone with information to step forward and contact the GBI Regional Investigation Office in Columbus or to submit tips anonymously online.
Once the GBI finishes its independent investigation, the Coweta Judicial Circuit's District Attorney's Office will review the case. Local communities are currently dealing with the loss of life and recognizing the risks law enforcement face daily to keep the public safe from those who break the law.
