The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has identified the man fatally shot by Atlanta police officers last week as 41-year-old Maryland resident Claudy Pierre Jules. The GBI has issued a call for Jules' family or relatives to come forward and has provided contact information for its regional investigative office in Atlanta.
In a violent encounter that left three officers with non-life-threatening injuries, Jules was killed in the aftermath of a confrontation with police. Authorities report that on May 11, officers responded to a call on Genessee Avenue and Fairbanks Street SW around 5:15 p.m., involving a man allegedly brandishing a firearm. When approached by the officers near Desoto Avenue, Jules is said to have produced a handgun before being tackled to the ground. Amidst the scuffle, what was perceived as a gunshot was heard, soon after which Jules was shot by police, as per the details released by the GBI.
Responding officers were promptly taken to a local hospital to treat their gunshot wounds. The GBI confirmed the recovery of Jules's handgun at the scene. Jules was pronounced dead by EMS personnel and his body has been transferred to the Fulton County Medical Examiner for autopsy. The GBI is now conducting an independent probe into the shooting and will hand over the findings to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for a full review.
