The National Weather Service has issued a warning for severe weather conditions that struck the area yesterday. In response to the hazardous conditions, Grand Prairie officials have opened a cooling/charging station at the Public Safety Building to serve citizens in need. The facility, which is equipped to operate overnight, is open to all residents seeking respite from the inclement weather. However, transportation to the center is not provided, and entry is exclusive to service animals. For those hunkering down in the refuge, it's a bring-your-own-bedding situation — sleeping bags and cots are not permitted within the premises.
Grand Prairie has put a hold on all pets except for service animals at the cooling/charging station. Residents taking shelter are recommended to bring chargers for their devices and while water is provided, they are welcome to bring their sustenance. Meanwhile, two road closures are currently in effect due to the extreme weather. According to the City of Grand Prairie, Texas, Marshall Dr. is closed between Great Southwest and SH 161 due to downed power lines, and Conover Dr. at Bank of America Blvd. remains shut due to a broken pole as of May 28, 11:15 a.m.
Authorities are also urging caution around certain low-water crossings and flood-prone areas. This includes stretches of Carrier Pkwy, SW 3rd St., Riverside Pkwy, street flooding on Oakdale, and E. Jefferson. The city's social media pages are active with more information for those navigating the inclement conditions. As the city grapples with these weather-related setbacks, the sense of community is evident, with resources, although limited, being mobilized to aid those affected.
