The Portland Rose Festival officially announced the grand marshal for this year's Grand Floral Parade will be Greg McKelvey, a name familiar in the local music education circle. Serving as the band director at Battle Ground High School, McKelvey has made a profound impact, his dedication echoing throughout the school's hallways and beyond. His role as grand marshal comes after decades of participation in the festival with his students, as reported by KGW.

"Greg represents everything we love about the Rose Festival and Grand Floral Parade," said Contesa Diaz-Nicolaidis, the president of the Rose Festival Board, in a statement obtained by KGW. McKelvey's upcoming retirement adds to the honor, marking his final appearance in the parade which has, for many, become synonymous with his career and influence on the youth.

The Battle Ground High School icon humbly accepted the honor in an interview with KATU, highlighting his altruistic drive. "It means a lot because, to be candid with you, you guys could have chosen a number of great people. but to be the one who was chosen to me was truly an honor," McKelvey told KATU. "I've never been in this for personal rewards, my goal has always been to have students be successful and I feel like when they're successful, I'm successful," he added.

Months of preparation precede the Grand Floral Parade for McKelvey and his students, often starting their rehearsals in the winter months. This dedication is a testament to McKelvey's lifelong commitment to musical excellence which will be showcased one last time during this poignant swan song. McKelvey shared some parting wisdom in an interview with KPTV, "What’d I’d say to the band director and the bands coming up is, number one be well prepared, number two enjoy the moment," he told KPTV.

McKelvey's selection as grand marshal doesn't only reflect his contributions to the festival but also shines a light on the role music educators play in enriching community events and nurturing the next generation of talent. As the city gears up to celebrate the Portland Rose Festival, it also prepares to bid farewell to a beloved figure who has helped to make the Grand Floral Parade a cherished celebration year after year.
