A police dog in Gwinnett County is being hailed as a hero after it located a child with autism who had gone missing. K9 Sika and Sgt. Brandon Townley were the duo responsible for finding the young child who wandered away from home last month.

According to FOX5 Atlanta, the search began on April 22 after the child left their home on foot. Sika, a crossbred between a Hanoverian Hound and a Plott Hound known for her friendly demeanor, was quick to pick up the scent. Her abilities as a search dog have made her an invaluable asset to the police department since joining in July 2022.

Bodycam footage released by the department captured the tense moments leading up to the discovery of the child. The video, as reported by WSBTV, shows Sika meticulously sniffing around before locating the child in a nearby wooded area. The child was unharmed and even found comfort in petting Sika's back after being found.

"We thank K9 Sika for helping to bring this child home," a statement from the department expressed the relief and gratitude of everyone involved, according to WSBTV. Sika is no stranger to law enforcement operations, having been part of an arrest previously when a hit-and-run suspect was found in a chicken coop. Her contributions to public safety highlight the importance of K9 units in not just law enforcement but in community care.

The success story also spotlights Project Lifesaver, a program partnered with the Gwinnett Police Department designed to locate at-risk individuals who may wander due to their special needs. The program's effective strategies have resulted in over 2,000 successful recoveries nationwide, with no serious injuries or deaths reported and average recovery times under 30 minutes.
