The fatal event occurred on a Saturday night around 8:30 p.m., where it was determined by officers that a Ford F250 truck, driven by 54-year-old David Alvarado of Madera, rear-ended the vehicle of the missionary couple.
The forceful impact sent the Hardins' Nissan Sentra into the Chevrolet Camaro ahead, according to Yahoo News. Mary Hardin, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene, and her 69-year-old husband, Paul, suffered major injuries leading to his eventual passing. Mark Anthony Rivera of Fresno, the Camaro's sole occupant, survived the ordeal with minor injuries.
David Alvarado, the driver responsible for the collision, also sustained minor injuries. The California Highway Patrol indicates that Alvarado was arrested and is now facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
