Horsepower and high fashion galloped hand in hand as thousands of spectators descended on Percy Warner Park for Nashville's 83rd Iroquois Steeplechase. A cornerstone of local tradition, the annual soiree took place on Saturday. Racegoers and revelers started their festivities bright and early at 8:30 a.m. for some pre-race tailgating.
The event, heralded as Nashville’s Rite of Spring, drew crowds north of 25,000, sticking to its reputation as a community staple. According to WSMV, the day was exciting, starting with the first race at 1 p.m. It's an enduring spectacle that has withstood the test of time.
Among the attendees were Lance and Laura Carney, pictured sporting their eye-catching headpieces—a testament to the event's reputation for sartorial statements. The vibrant display of hats is as much a part of the steeplechase as the races themselves. This is evidenced by the colorful gallery featured in The Tennessean, showcasing attendees' flair for fashion alongside the equine action.
"It's kind of like the right of passage of Nashville and it's an exciting place to be. Everyone comes and they’re happy. We welcome all the newcomers as well," spectator Nancy Gregg told NewsChannel 5. Brian Horowitz added humor to the mix, quipping, "Just remember if you get caught drinking at steeple better know the right people," highlighting the event's convivial and often cheeky spirit.
