A Horn Lake man was sentenced to 30 years behind bars on Tuesday for an armed robbery and aggravated assault at a local Walmart Market Money Center last year. Marcus Fields, 34, reportedly brandished a semi-automatic weapon during the July heist, making off with over $12,000 in cash.
Justice quickly caught up to Fields after the Horn Lake Police, with help from the DeSoto County District Attorney’s investigators, used a left-behind debit card and firearm to track him down. The thief's getaway car, a black Pontiac, was also spotted on MDOT traffic camera footage, which further implicated him in the crime.
The strong-armed sentence handed down by the judge reflects the severity of the crimes committed by Fields, who presented a note to a store associate demanding money and threatening their life with the chilling words, “Don’t make me kill you. Give me all the money,” as detailed in an account obtained by DeSoto County News.
After the ruling, District Attorney Matthew Barton voiced his satisfaction with the verdict. "Our office is going to hit hard against those who endanger the lives of others in DeSoto County," he declared in a news release. Assistant District Attorneys Andrew Willcutt and Ben Weathers led the prosecution, sealing Fields' fate with the decisive 30-year sentence.
