As Pride Month kicks into high gear, Council Member Abbie Kamin has teamed up with the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce to host the third annual Families with Pride celebration. Sponsored by Kamin, this community uniting affair is set to unfold at Discovery Green on Saturday, June 1, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Families, children, and allies from across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum are invited to partake in a plethora of activities that promise to be both informative and entertaining.
"Families with Pride was inspired by our district’s LGBTQIA+ families, they helped start this. They are Houston’s families," Council Member Kamin stated according to The Leader News. The event boasts an array of festivities, including live entertainment, art projects, Storytime, and a mobile gym. Among the highlights, attendees can look forward to face painting, a photo booth, and an immersive History of Pride exhibit.
Adding to the vibrancy, The Proud Puppy Pawty is a special attraction where residents can bring their pets to the Discovery Green Dog Run—complete with a contest for the most creatively dressed canines. "At a time when discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ continues to rise, parents, children, and allies deserve a welcoming place created just for our kids,” added Kamin. Safety and inclusion are top priorities for this family-centric occasion, as reported by cw39.
The celebration is more than just fun and games; it serves as a sanctuary for expression and solidarity. "We’re excited to bring the festival back and are extremely grateful to all our community partners, sponsors, and the Mayor’s Office of Special Events--without them, this event wouldn’t be possible. I also want to thank HPD, HFD, and public safety partners for ensuring this event is welcoming and safe for all,” Kamin further explained in a statement obtained by The Leader News. The event underscores the importance of community and the power of unity in the fight for equality and acceptance.
Community organizations will also be onsite to provide support and resources to LGBTQIA+ families. For those looking to join the reaffirmation of inclusivity, the event is open to all, and best of all, it’s free. As Tammi Wallace, Co-Founder, President & CEO of the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce said, "This festival honors the beautiful families that are part of the tapestry of the LGBTQIA+ and Allied community," supporting the notion that Houston is indeed a place where every color of the rainbow is recognized and celebrated.
