A dark turn of events has led to Shawna Sharell Torrence, 38, being charged with the murder of Steven Johnson, 39, after a night that ended in a fatal stabbing at an address on Richmond Avenue, as reported by the Houston Police Department (HPD). Torrence, who was initially detained for questioning, will now face the upgraded charges in the 488th State District Court. City of Houston News disclosed this development along with a new booking photo of the accused.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of last Friday, following which Johnson, who was critically wounded, was rushed to an area hospital. Despite urgent medical care, Johnson succumbed to his injuries the next day. Patrol officers relayed to HPD detectives that an unrelated investigation led to them being tipped off about Johnson's critical state. He was left with a stab wound, allegedly inflicted by Torrence, his dating partner, who had attempted to leave the scene but was stopped by officials.
Evidence gathered from preliminary investigations suggested that Johnson and Torrence, along with a witness, had visited several bars before the incident. After the witness was dropped off, Torrence claimed to find Johnson unresponsive and bleeding in the back seat of her vehicle. In a distressing attempt to seek medical aid, she drove him to Richmond Avenue for treatment. However, despite being airlifted to a hospital, Johnson's life could not be saved.
Detective D. King of the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division reported that the male told emergency medical personnel the female (Torrence), who attempted to leave the location, was trying to kill him. Torrence was then arrested on Wednesday, having been identified as the primary suspect in what has since morphed from a tragic altercation to a case of homicide. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was promptly notified, and the murder charge was formulated against Torrence, who was arrested without further incident.
