In a joint effort to curb auto thefts, Hyundai owners in Los Angeles are getting a crime-fighting boost, courtesy of the car giant and the LAPD, with a series of security software updates and VIN etching events slated to start this Friday at Eagle Rock Plaza, according to the LAPD.

The public service campaign kicks off with a press conference today, followed by a three-day affair from May 17 through May 19, where Hyundai drivers can swing by the old Macy’s parking lot anytime between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to enhance their vehicles' security at no cost; not only will they receive a software update aimed at reinforcing anti-theft systems, but a free steering wheel lock will also be tossed into the mix to further deter thieves, no appointments necessary.

Top brass from the LAPD will be in attendance, including Captain III Jay Hom and Detective III Mike Ventura, alongside reps like Ira Gabriel from Hyundai USA and Allen Woods from the Auto Club Association of America, as per the LAPD's release.

The innovative Insta-Etch Mark 3 device, acquired through grant funds, will leave a permanent mark on cars by etching VINs into the window glass, a measure that is seen as a best practice amidst a surge in catalytic converter thefts; Detective Ventura is on tap not only to demonstrate the etching but also to share insights on trends in auto theft and strategies to keep cars safe, the LAPD announcement states.

With a citywide distribution of these high-tech tools, all 21 geographic areas within the city are expected to host similar events, a program wholeheartedly endorsed by the Police Chief, the Mayor, and the City Council, for further details or media queries Detective III Michael Ventura can be reached at 323-561-3257 or through [email protected].
