An inmate at the Travis County Correctional Complex met his end in mysterious circumstances last Sunday. Robert Valentino Munguia, a 63-year-old Austin man, was found lifeless in his unit, and efforts to revive him were in vain.
Munguia was discovered unresponsive at 10:39 a.m. on May 22, as per a press release provided by Kristen Dark, Sr. Public Information Officer, and Drew Knight, Public Information and Social Media Specialist. He had been in custody since November 26, 2023, after being charged with Injury to a Child/Elderly. Despite immediate CPR attempts by correctional staff, he was pronounced dead on the scene.
A full investigation is now in motion by the TCSO’s Internal Affairs Unit, the Criminal Investigations Division, the Texas Rangers, and the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. This is standard procedure when any death occurs while in custody. The autopsy, conducted the following day, is yet to offer some closure as the final report remains pending.
