"[Recently], we had a couple of incidents at Houghton Beach Park and Juanita Beach Park that are similar to those that have proceeded prior critical incidents involving serious injuries," he revealed in a statement by the City of Kirkland. High-tech eyes will now monitor these locations, chosen in line with crime statistics and investigatory strategies. The move is part of a broader strategy to curtail illicit activity in these public spaces, which remain open from dawn 'till 10 PM.
In a statement obtained by the city's official website, Parks and Community Services Director Lynn Zwaagstra expressed the department's support for this synergy with the police force. They are committed to making sure that park visitors have an enjoyable and danger-free experience. Besides this technology rollout, the plan also includes an uptick in police patrols during the parks' operational hours.
Picking up the tab for these preventative tools, Kirkland PD is prepared to fork out about $5,000 monthly per camera setup. These costs are absorbed within the police department's budget, and the city has the option to extend the rental period of the equipment should the need arise.
