A gang member has been found guilty in the 2023 LaGrange murder case, prosecutors said. Lateef Jamil Moreland, 24, was convicted of multiple charges including malice murder, felony murder, and other felonies linked to gang activities, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
The Troup County jury convicted Moreland on May 17, with evidence suggesting he murdered 30-year-old Alan Dale Huguley Jr. to rise through the ranks of the Gangster Disciples. On the night of Jan. 28, 2023, Huguley was gunned down in his car by two masked assailants, who fired, at least, 21 shots. Moreland, meanwhile, is set to be sentenced on June 5.
Prosecutors also disclosed that Moreland was seen in surveillance footage without his mask at a convenience store in LaGrange, wearing the same clothes as one of the shooters on the day of the murder. Following the incident, Moreland was apprehended on June 10 in Valdosta, Georgia, WRBL shared.
Further, a teal-colored Taurus handgun linked to the crime scene through ballistics was later found in Moreland's possession. Digital evidence, including images shared on social media platforms, showed Moreland with the handgun prior to the murder. Before this conviction, Moreland had been out of prison for a little over four months after a five-year sentence for a robbery by force conviction.
In the words of the Chief Assistant District Attorney Jack Winne, the jury's decision underscored the weight of the evidence presented at trial. The LaGrange Police Department Detectives Darrell Prichard and Jarrod Anderson were credited for their investigative efforts leading to the conviction.
