In a Laredo courtroom, a 26-year-old man faced the stiff hand of justice for crimes that have been described as unspeakable, reported the U.S. Attorney's Office. Aaron Negrete, who had earlier pleaded guilty to producing and possessing child pornography involving a minor relative, was dealt a two-decade prison sentence.
U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison sentenced Negrete to 225 months for his crimes, a stretch that will run concurrently, as U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani pointed out. In a display of the system's condemnation, the court also ordered Negrete to fork over $30,000 in restitution, to known victims of his possessed child pornography. Negrete's grim future includes a five-year supervision post-release, with stringent conditions to curtail his access to children, and the internet – and, registering as a sex offender is a must.
The crack in the case came when authorities flagged an IP address tied to Negrete, which had uploaded child pornography online. A search warrant on October 12, 2022, led to the seizure of several electronic devices from Negrete's home, affirming the gruesome evidence. He admitted to downloading an application to scour for child pornography that included the abuse of babies and toddlers, as well as sexually abusing and recording his minor relative.
“The Aaron Negrete sentence today sets the tone for how we will handle child predators in our state,” declared Special Agent in Charge Craig Larrabee, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Antonio. HSI partnered with various other law enforcement agencies under the Child Exploitation Task Force banner to unravel Negrete's deeds, a task force that is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), an initiative the Department of Justice (DOJ) supports, aiming to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, as reported by U.S. Attorney's Office.
Negrete will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
