LEXINGTON, Mass. — The Lexington Police Department has issued a warning to residents following a series of mailbox thefts. In the early hours of Monday morning, postal thieves targeted USPS mailboxes located outside the town's post office on 1661 Massachusetts Avenue, as well as a mailbox outside the town office building, as reported by Boston 25 News.
This is not the first time the Lexington community has been affected by such incidents, just last month, mailboxes on the same road were hit by a thief, potentially using a master key. The identity of the perpetrators has not been established, and it remains unclear if the crimes are linked. In light of these events, authorities are urging local residents to rethink their mail drop-off habits for the sake of security. "We understand the convenience of being able to drive up and drop off your mail, however, it is in your best interest to take a few extra minutes to go into the post office and drop your mail off inside the building," Lexington Police advised in a social media post, as obtained by Boston 25 News.
Local authorities are asking anyone who has sent checks via the defrauded mailboxes to contact their financial institutions immediately. The WHDH report reinforces the advisory to all residents to use the inside services of the post office instead of external mailboxes for sending out any mail until the issue is resolved.
The investigations into these mailbox robberies are ongoing, and the Lexington Police Department remains on the lookout for any individuals involved in these theft activities. Residents, meanwhile, have been left to deal with the inconvenience, and the potential financial repercussions that come with identity theft and fraud. Community members are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
