Early morning prowling led to a flurry of police activity in the Highlands area of Los Altos yesterday when a routine patrol led to the arrest of a man suspected of burglary. According to the City of Los Altos Police Department, the suspicious individual had been noticed near a construction site's perimeter around 5 a.m., seemingly casing the joint.
A brief chase ensued after the suspect, spotted with a van, fled on foot, leading officers from Los Altos and neighboring Palo Alto on an exhaustive hunt. The officers, accompanied by K9 Brock, locked down the neighborhood. The police dog proved instrumental, sniffing out evidence along the suspect's trail. The chase ended near Eva and Montclaire Place, where the suspect was tackled and cuffed.
The suspect, identified as an adult male from Hayward, faced a litany of charges: burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, and several drug-related offenses, including possession of methamphetamines and drug paraphernalia, resistance to arrest, and hoarding of burglary tools and stolen property. The van, confirmed to be stolen, was a rolling cache of high-end kitchen appliances and accessories.
Authorities have since shuttled the man off to Santa Clara County Main Jail, where he'll face the music for the aforementioned allegations. As for the Los Altos detectives, they're digging deeper, suggesting additional charges, and reaching out to victims on the horizon.
