A DeKalb County jury has convicted a man for brutally gunning down another at a Stone Mountain gas station last year. Nathan Weeks, 27, faces a life behind bars for the murder of 54-year-old Isaac Godbolt with charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony, as reported by 11Alive.
The incident that culminated in Godbolt's death occurred on June 20, 2023, when Weeks showed up at the gas station and after a brief interaction with a group near a silver car, he confronted Godbolt who had drove up to speak with someone from that group and moved his vehicle forward before Weeks rushed to Godbolt's car fired multiple shots at him and fled, this according to FOX 5 Atlanta. The early investigation pointed to a grim scene where DeKalb County Police found Godbolt with multiple gunshot wounds sitting in his car; he succumbed to his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital shortly after.
A crucial piece of evidence was the confession Weeks made during a recorded conversation with his mother, as disclosed in court and Weeks was later nabbed in Columbus, Georgia, where officers discovered the handgun used in the shooting on his person, a link made by ballistic tests matching the weapon to the crime scene.
Sentencing for Weeks is pending in the coming weeks with the case prosecuted by the Homicide and Gangs Unit of the DeKalb County District Attorney's office—Senior Assistant District Attorney Kara Roberts taking the lead, Senior Assistant District Attorney Andrew Turner, District Attorney Investigator J.B. Williams and Victim Advocate Kaysha Albritton all played a role in bringing the case to a conviction with Senior Judge Winston Bethel overseeing the proceedings. Detective Smith of the DeKalb County Police Department led the charge in piecing together the events that took place at the gas station that fatal day, the investigation now concluding with the recent jury's decision.
