Tragedy struck at the heart of Atlanta yesterday, as a 21-year-old man was shot in broad daylight. The incident occurred on May 28, around 1:53PM, at 903 Martin Luther King Junior Drive NW – a street that bears the name of peace, but witnessed violence. According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers were swiftly dispatched to the scene upon receiving reports of the shooting. They found the young man with a gunshot wound to his left arm, fortunately conscious and able to quickly be taken to the hospital for his injuries.
The victim, whose identity has yet to be revealed, was able to provide a bit of hope amidst the chaos, being alert and breathing when help arrived. The investigators, specializing in Aggravated Assaults, are currently working to piece together the events that led up to this violent act. The community is left to struggle with the potential loss and the tearing of the fabric that binds the memory of Dr. King with the reality of this violence. Police have yet to release information on potential suspects or motives, as they continue to sift through evidence and eye-witness accounts.
The neighborhood, accustomed to the regular hum of daily life and the reverberating words of Dr. King, were halted by the sound of sirens and the sight of an all too familiar scene. While details remain scant, what is current and pressing is a man's journey towards recovery, and a community's journey towards understanding and, hopefully, towards peace.
Atlanta Police Department has called on anyone with information to come forward as they seek to rapidly close this case. The true justice, however, begs to serve not only in the capturing of the shooter but also in the unifying of a community. Too often, these neighborhoods are riddled with the echoes of gunfire only to later whisper the stories of the lost and the aftermath that follows. The Atlanta Police Department has assured the public that they are committed to apprehending the perpetrator swiftly to prevent anyone else from becoming a victim to such senseless violence.
