Mayor Muriel Bowser has officially opened a new Safe Commercial Corridor Hub in Anacostia, aiming to better connect residents with a range of city services. This hub is the second of its kind in Washington D.C., with the first one kicking off in Chinatown earlier this year. According to a statement on dc.gov, Mayor Bowser highlighted that "These hubs are where residents can walk in and get help from multiple DC Government agencies – they are focal points for community engagement."
The hub, found at 2300 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, will be open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The initiative brings together multiple government offices including the Metropolitan Police Department, Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services, Department of Behavioral Health, and others under one roof, supposed to significantly improve service delivery and community safety. The Department of Employment Services will also be housed at the hub until later this spring, when it moves to its permanent location.
Anacostia's hub arises amidst a mixed reception from the public. Some local residents are hopeful, seeing it as a step forward in addressing the needs of a community that's often felt sidelined. The corridors also aim to bring a police presence closer to the streets they serve, permitting officers to write reports and complete administrative tasks without withdrawing from the neighborhoods.
Reflecting on the positives, data from the Chinatown hub shows a drop in violent crime by 78% within a 1,000 feet radius since its inception, according to dc.gov. Additionally, the hub has managed to effectively connect residents with services, with over 112 referrals to the Department of Behavioral Health and 99 to the Department of Human Services recorded.
Mayor Bowser's move to open the Anacostia hub comes on the heels of the recently completed MLK Gateway project in the area. Completed projects and initiatives like these symbolize a continued investment in the region by city officials, with hopes that they will breathe new life into the historic Anacostia neighborhood and further revitalize its local economy and cultural vibrancy.
