Memphis Firefighters Tackle Major Blaze at Asphalt Plant, No Injuries ReportedSource: Google Street View

The Memphis Fire Department worked to quickly contain a significant blaze at a commercial facility on President's Island over the weekend. As reported by WREG, MFD units were dispatched to 1989 Channel Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday in response to what appeared to be an oil-based fire that impacted multiple tanks within the property.

Upon arrival, firefighters faced intense heavy smoke and flames, needing to amass a considerable task force. The scene saw deployment of 38 fire trucks and more than 100 personnel. The MFD worked diligently to quickly bring the situation under control. According to coverage by FOX13 Memphis, the department also deployed a fire boat in a lake behind the facility to prevent chemical contamination of the water body.

Action News 5 reported that the facility where the fire broke out was an asphalt plant, which added to the complexity of the firefighting efforts due to the flammable nature of the materials. Thankfully, the Memphis Fire Department stated that there have been no injuries reported as a result of the inferno.

As the smoke clears and the immediate danger subsides, the MFD's focus will to further shift to determining the cause of the fire. While their investigation is freshly underway, the impact of this incident on local business operations, as well as on the environment, remains to be fully assessed. As of now, the fire is contained, and while the site is still regarded as an active scene, the MFD has advised the public to keep a safe distance and avoid the affected area.
