A manhunt following a violent carjacking in Memphis ended with a 22-year-old man in cuffs, charged with a litany of crimes including attempted first-degree murder. Suspect Jaylen Simpson allegedly shot a man and then hijacked his vehicle yesterday morning, as per Memphis Police Department (MPD) officials.
The chaotic scene unfolded in southwest Memphis, where officers found the victim critically wounded around 7:50 a.m. near the intersection of W Horn Lake Rd. and W Mitchell Rd., an area typically brimming with the bustle of the city’s morning routines. The victim, found bleeding beside his 2017 Kia Cadenza, was rushed to Regional One Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, as Local Memphis reported.
According to the official account, Simpson's flight from justice led him nearly 10 miles away from the crime scene. Investigators reported spotting the stolen Kia near Kimball and Pendleton and gave chase. The pursuit ended after Simpson, allegedly found with a backpack, fled by foot but was subsequently apprehended in the 2200 block of Arlington Rd. WREG detailed that a loaded pistol, which matched the one from the shooting scene and stolen from a car on May 4th, was found in his possession.
MPD stated that Simpson not only led them on a high-speed chase but also recklessly endangered the lives of Memphis residents. Following the foot chase, he was taken into custody and slotted to appear in court on May 20. In the statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis, police listed multiple charges against Simpson, including especially aggravated robbery, theft of property, reckless driving, evading arrest, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
