Mesa's youngsters have a shot at blending art with cycling in a citywide contest designed to get more kids on bikes and into books. The "Bike to Books" art competition, now in its second year, is welcoming entries until July 31, inviting students from prekindergarten up to 12th grade to submit designs that could end up adorning the city's shared use paths, as reported by the Mesa's official website.
Intending to spark both reading and riding among young residents, the collaboration between Mesa's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program and the Mesa Public Library offers winning artists something special: their very own bike symbol designs installed for all to see come winter. Contenders, who can be in school or homeschooled, are split into three grade brackets with the creators of the top designs all promised prizes.
As stated by the City of Mesa, "It was exciting to see last year's winners light up when they saw their final designs installed," said Mesa Library Director Polly Bonnett, sharing the joy of past contenders who partook in this merging of creativity and community engagement, "The contest celebrates the adventures of both biking and reading, and we can’t wait to see the creative designs our young participants come up with next."
Youngsters eager to participate are encouraged to swing by any Mesa Public Library branch to grab a design sheet or snag one online via the library's website.
