Two lives were abruptly ended in Mesa and the man responsible for the cold-blooded act has been handed a harsh dose of justice. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell confirmed that Aaron Aldric Thomas, born in May 1969, will spend the rest of his days behind bars, having received two consecutive natural life sentences for a double homicide that shook the local community.
In a statement that reflects the gravity of the crime, County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said, "In two minutes, this man killed two people in such a cold-blooded, calculated way, making prison for the rest of his life the right place for him to be." The meticulously planned murders occurred on January 28, 2022, when Thomas, donning gloves and a mask, shot his victims during a supposed drug transaction. The first victim was shot in the back as he opened his home door to Thomas, and upon hearing screams, the second victim pleaded for her life before she too, was mercilessly shot multiple times.
DNA evidence collected from a retaining wall touched by Thomas while fleeing the scene was critical in linking him to the crimes. Further video footage from various locations near the crime provided damning proof of his presence at the site. These led police directly to Thomas' Laveen residence, where he was apprehended despite being a prohibited possessor with prior felonies that should have precluded him from gun ownership.
Rachel Mitchell praised the efforts of the Homicide Bureau Chief Jon Eliason, and Deputy County Attorney John Hudson for their handling of the complex case, stating, "I commend Homicide Bureau Chief Jon Eliason and Deputy County Attorney John Hudson for their work on this complicated case." On December 14, 2023, Thomas was convicted on charges including two counts of first-degree murder and armed robbery, among others. His sentencing on May 3rd reflected the severity of his offences, earning him natural life sentences for the murders, and additional time for the remaining charges.
Details of the crimes and subsequent trial can be traced through Maricopa County Attorney's official release, providing insight into the criminal proceedings that delivered justice for the victims and their families. As the details of this case settle in the annals of crime and punishment, the outcome serves as a grim reminder of the consequences that await those who transgress the law to such a devastating degree.
