The streets of Mesa will get a little safer this Memorial Day weekend as local cops ramp up efforts to snag drunk drivers. The Mesa Police Department is setting its sights on impaired motorists, running a DUI enforcement operation that kicked off Friday, May 24th, and will continue through Monday, May 27th, an announcement by the department revealed.
In a bid to curb the calamity of crashes caused by boozed-up drivers, the traffic unit will be out in full force, each night from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. It's all part of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) Memorial Day Weekend DUI Task Force, with the local constabulary joining the fray. The initiative is designed to decrease vehicular collisions triggered by those driving under the influence, and ultimately, to make the Valley's roads safer for all.
According to a release on the city of Mesa's website, the Mesa Police Department is encouraging locals to celebrate responsibly and has a simple message: if you're going to drink, hand over the keys, find yourself a sober driver. They're not just looking out for revelers, though—the department is calling on residents to keep their eyes peeled and report any suspicious, erratic, or potentially DUI driving to their non-emergency line at 480-644-2211.
Every year, this task force blitz has a clear mission: to extract those impaired by drink or drugs from behind the wheel before they can do harm. Community engagement plays a pivotal role in this endeavor, and this year, it's no different. Law enforcement counts on the vigilance of the community to phone in tips that might lead to DUIs being taken off the streets, improving the overall safety of the grand American holiday weekend.
