A Miami auto tag agency clerk has been caught in the gears of the law, accused of orchestrating a $3.3 million vehicle title fraud scheme. Katherine M. Vera Moran, 27, faces 36 felony charges after an investigation into a local chop shop led authorities to uncover her alleged involvement in a crime that dealt in luxury vehicles and forged identities.
Vera Moran, who worked at Baumgardner Auto Tag Agency in Allapattah, was nabbed Monday according to an arrest report that emerged after Doral Police detected a stolen car pinging at an auto shop, leading to the discovery of three high-end stolen vehicles and two fraudulent VIN plates. The chop shop's owner, upon arrest, pointed the finger at Vera Moran, reported NBC Miami.
Vera Moran reportedly manipulated VINs from total loss vehicles to apply to the stolen luxury cars, receiving $800 to $1,000 per fraudulent transaction. Authorities discovered a total of 18 vehicles, about twelve confirmed as stolen, leading to an estimated recovery worth $3,385,000. "Fraudulent title transfers not only deceive the system but inflict profound harm on victims who suffer the loss of property and insurance companies who are forced to cover theft claims," Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle explained in a statement given to Local10.
During questioning, Vera Moran appeared to downplay her participation, implying it was not her responsibility to authenticate documents processed, stating "it was not her job to verify the documents that she processes and that she is not a police officer," which was relayed by Local10. The detective highlighted that most fraudulent titles were issued to individuals, contrary to her claims of dealing only with dealership requests. Additionally, detectives found incriminating evidence of her dealings with clients on her phone.
Arrested and booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Vera Moran was held on a $180,000 bond. This isn't her first run-in with the law; she was already out on felony bond for a previous charge of leaving the scene of a crash causing no serious injury. Now, with the community reeling from the repercussions of these fraudulent activities, authorities and insurance companies are left to mitigate the impacts of heightened premiums and lost property—ripples from the waves of deceit and theft that have emanated from the clerk's desk at Baumgardner Auto Tag Agency.
