In a poignant tribute to fallen cyclists, Miami-Dade County Parks teams up with BIKE305 for the solemn 22nd annual Ride of Silence on May 15. Participants will gather in a silent procession through Key Biscayne to honor those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries while riding on public roads.
The ride, which coincides with National Bike Month, will commence at Crandon Park Marina and will see cyclists traversing an eight-mile or a shortened four-mile route in complete silence. Police from Miami-Dade County and the Village of Key Biscayne are expected to escort the participants, ensuring a safe passage through Crandon Boulevard.
Riders of all skill levels are urged to participate and also imbibe updates on the county's safety initiatives. Part of this effort, as reported by Miami-Dade County's release, is the Vision Zero plan which ambitiously aims to obliterate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2040 within the county.
Miami-Dade Parks is currently enhancing the cycling experience off the beaten path, promoting trail expansions like The Underline and the Ludlam Trail, projects that facilitate safer routes to everyday destinations. The initiative is a nod to the county’s commitment to growing a network of trails connecting parks, schools, business hubs, and transit points.
Aspiring participants can expect to start arriving by 6 p.m., with opening remarks to follow at 6:40 p.m., before the ride officially sets off at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored and supported by local collective, the Everglades Bicycle Club.
