A lucky Mega Millions player in Michigan just narrowly missed out on a massive $393 million jackpot prize, but they're still taking home a hefty $1 million, per lottery officials. The Michigan Lottery confirmed that the near-jackpot ticket matched five winning numbers from the drawing on Friday – 8, 17, 40, 60, and 70 – but missed the Mega Ball, which was 3. While no winner has claimed the $1 million jackpot yet, they'll certainly be aiming to do so within a year; otherwise, the ticket will expire. The winning ticket was bought at a Kroger store located at 700 N. State Road in Davison, as WJRT reports.

A previous Mega Millions jackpot of $842 million also went unclaimed for almost half a year after being won by a ticket from Grand Blanc Township. According to The News Tribune, the absence of a grand prize winner this time around means the jackpot has climbed up to an estimated $421 million, with a cash option of about $196 million for the next drawing on Tuesday.

But it wasn't just the Davison area player who won big; more than 31,000 other tickets sold across Michigan scooped up smaller prizes ranging from $2 to $10,000. For the unfamiliar, hitting a Mega Millions jackpot means matching all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball, a feat with daunting odds of 1 in 302,575,350, reports MLive. Tickets sell for $2 each and must be purchased before the state-specific sales cut off time. The drawings take place at 11 p.m. ET every Tuesday and Friday.

The Michigan Lottery recommends that the winner contact their office to make an appointment to claim their winnings at Lottery headquarters in Lansing. Instructively, the winner soon has to take action or risk becoming another statistic like a $1 million ticket from Southfield that went unclaimed in 2023, the funds eventually funneled into the state's School Aid Fund. It would serve as an important reminder that all players should check their tickets post-haste. The Mega Millions game is available in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
