A mother was shot dead, and her child wounded in a Minneapolis neighborhood, in what police are calling a senseless tragedy. Minneapolis Police Department disclosed a homicide investigation following the shooting that occurred on the 2900 block of Cedar Avenue on Sunday, May 19. The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, succumbed to her injuries at Hennepin Healthcare earlier this morning, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed.
"I am deeply saddened to learn that the mother of this child has lost her life in such a senseless act of violence," Police Chief Brian O'Hara remarked in a heartfelt statement. The child, who also suffered gunshot wounds while seated in a parked car with her mother at around 9:23 pm, is expected to make a recovery. O’Hara is appealing to the public for any leads, urging them to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). So far, the police have made no arrests in the case.
Further reports indicate that the assailant fired several shots into the vehicle, but authorities are still piecing together what prompted the violence. Following a ShotSpotter alert that indicated four shots had been fired, cops found evidence of gunfire in an alley near the site of the attack. The incident, now recorded under GO# 24-135357, continues to be thoroughly investigated by the Minneapolis Police Department.
