Allen City Council welcomed new blood and bid farewell to a seasoned member during their latest meeting. Michael Schaeffer, freshly elected to Councilmember Place 1, was sworn in, stepping into a role previously held by interim Councilmember Mary Vail-Grube. "I’m honored and privileged," Schaeffer declared, indicating his eagerness to dive into the service of the Allen community for the next three years, according to the City of Allen.
In a poignant tribute, the council recognized Vail-Grube's contributions; she had stepped in after Daren Meis vacated the position to run for the State of Texas House of Representatives. During the meeting, Vail-Grube was commemorated with, a somewhat unusual parting gift – a custom street sign, a nod to her journey through the byways of local politics.
The council wasn't just about changeover. It also served as an occasion to honor one of Allen's late devout public servants. Edward Swierenga, noted for his deep involvement with the Allen Animal Shelter and overall community commitment, was posthumously celebrated. His family received a plaque memorializing his "steadfast service," with his wife Stacy reflecting, "He was so passionate about the care and welfare of animals for his entire life." Swierenga's work on the Allen Animal Shelter Advisory Committee was particularly spotlighted as a point of service that exemplified his community spirit and love for animals, as per the City of Allen.
Meanwhile, Allen's young ones have exciting developments to anticipate as the council approved over a million bucks for new playground gear at Allen Station Park. The dated 1998 installations will give way to modern play structures designed to rejuvenate the space, ushering in an era of fresh fun for the local kiddos.
As residents look ahead, they're also called to look back at the commendable work of Keep Allen Beautiful (KAB). During the meeting, KAB basked in the glow of their annual report, boasting litter removal totaling 12,000 pounds and collecting up to 130,000 pounds of recyclables at a single event. KAB's local, state, and national awards list was as long as a Texas summer day, while scholarships named for Mardy and Lisa Brown, and Donna Kliewer were handed to deserving Allen ISD students, ensuring the legacy of civic pride and environmental stewardship endures.
