A North Miami man's brutal interaction with his dogs caught on video has led to his arrest and a slew of animal cruelty charges, as seen in clips that have sparked widespread condemnation across social media platforms. The accused, 22-year-old Juan Pablo Gaviria Arce, faces two counts of third-degree animal cruelty with the intent to injure or kill after a witness presented disturbing videos to the police, according to a report by WSVN.
One distressing video from May 1, showcased the man lifting his dog and punching it with such force that the pained yelps could reportedly be heard a block away, Gaviria Arce, after being confronted by police, claimed the dog was a stuffed animal but eventually conceded that it was indeed his pet and anger led him to act so violently, this was followed by another video that emerged on May 28 displaying him jabbing a broomstick at two caged dogs, a recording that not only attracted over a million views on social media but also sent shockwaves through the virtual realm for its sheer cruelty, as reported by NBC Miami.
Miami-Dade Animal Services have since intervened, taking custody of the dogs from the residence on Northeast 125th Street where the assaults took place, seeking to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals following their ordeal. A neighbor, Marcela Salomon, has been vocal about the abuse, expressing concerns about both the welfare of the animals and the alarming temperament of Gaviria Arce, "It's dangerous to be his neighbor," Salomon told WSVN.
In a significant twist evidencing his acknowledgment of wrongdoing, Gaviria admitted during a post-Miranda interview that the actions captured on video were indeed excessive, even as he tried to initially deflect by claiming the dogs were fighting and that his response, though ultimately acknowledged as "unnecessary," was an attempt to control them, he was arrested on Thursday and has since been confined at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond set at $5,000 as per NBC Miami's report.
