The Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin recently rolled out the red carpet for its grads. Marking a significant milestone, a reception was held on May 11 to honor a total of 32 students who wrapped up their graduate studies between August 2023 and May 2024. Those celebrating their academic triumphs received their degrees in fields ranging from Computational Science to Engineering and Mathematics.

During the bustling commencement day, faculty members were present including Oden Institute Core Faculty George Biros, who said, "It is with pride and admiration that we acknowledged our students for their perseverance, pursuit of scholarly excellence, and their collegiality throughout their journey here," according to the Oden Institute's website. The event, hosted in the Peter O’Donnell Building, not only honored the grads but also showed appreciation for the parents and families who supported them.

Several luminaries of the faculty, such as Oden Institute Director Karen Willcox and Todd Arbogast, Chair of the CSEM Graduate Studies Committee, joined Biros in celebrating the moment. Faculty members like Irene Gamba, Philip Morrison, and Tom Hughes also congratulated their students, facing a new chapter whether in academia, the industry, or at national research labs.

"Congratulations to all our graduates! We are very proud to call you all Oden Institute alumni and we can't wait to see your future accomplishments," Willcox reportedly commented. Among the graduates included remarkable projects, such as Kun Huang, who was awarded the 2024 Oden Institute Outstanding Dissertation Award for his work on kinetic models in plasmas, and others delving into advanced areas such as protein flurosequencing, wave control metamaterials, and machine learning-aided chemical kinetics.

The graduation event wasn't just a formal affair but a testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovative thinking that has become synonymous with the Oden Institute. The Institute, with each passing year, continues to bolster its reputation as a bedrock for cutting-edge research and academic prowess in the computational world.
