Hundreds of Phoenix residents honored fallen service members at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona during the "Home of the Brave" Memorial Day ceremony. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, the event saw a flag placed on each veteran's grave and included patriotic music and a ceremonial flyover. Keynote speaker and Gold Star mother, Diana Pike, reflected on the collective sacrifice: "It is amazing to know all the people resting in this beautiful facility have sacrificed, in one of the services, have sacrificed. I think it’s an accomplishment to our country, our patriotism as Americans, as we come together, nonpartisan, we all come together on this Memorial Day to remember the fallen and their sacrifice to our country," she said.
Joining Pike were other Gold Star mothers, sharing in the grief and remembrance of their lost children. Linda Gillam, having lost her daughter Shauna Ward in 2007, and Wendy Shackley, who lost her staff sergeant son, Joel McNeil, in 2014, attended the ceremony, which they find difficult but necessary. "This is honoring our children. I can't ask for anything more than this," Gillam told FOX 10 Phoenix in a statement reflective of the immense personal loss endured for the nation. Shackley added, "Memorial Day is the day that we celebrate the men and women who died for us. My son died for my freedom and it's something we should celebrate everyday, not just Memorial Day."
Retired Army Sergeant First Class Diana Pike, who once served in intelligence roles from Japan to Germany, has been named a Cold War Veteran Grand Marshal, a nod to her extensive military service and an acknowledgment of her status as a Gold Star mother. In an interview with Honoring America's Veterans, Pike discussed the impact of her military service and the painful loss of her son, Christian Pike, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2013. "He never doubted himself. He felt he was capable of anything," Pike recalled of her son's fearless character and service.
Diana Pike's commitment to military service and her son's legacy extends beyond personal tragedy. Having mentored and supported other military families following the loss of her son, her former co-worker Judy Austed noted, "Even after the loss of her son, Diana has helped my son's effort to enlist in the U.S. Navy and continues to support him while he serves." Pike's dedication to remembrance is also seen in her involvement with "Remembering our Fallen from Arizona," where her son's memory, among others, stands testament to the ultimate sacrifice, as observed by Honoring America's Veterans.
