Dos Chris' Bakery & Charcuterie Co., the central Phoenix shop known for its glittery walls and cupcakes frosted with uplifting messages, has closed permanently. The married couple behind the business, Chris Barbara and Chris Barbara, say they neglected their own mental health while focused on caring for their community, and the bakery at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road will be closed starting Wednesday.
According to AZ Family, the owners say they will provide full refunds for pre-orders and catering orders, and they plan to reach out directly to anyone with an outstanding order. The couple told the station they look forward to being part of the community in a different capacity going forward, though they did not detail what that next chapter might look like.
From Pandemic Side Hustle to Uptown Storefront
The bakery's roots trace back to 2020, when co-founders Chris Jeremy Barbara and Chris Joseph Barbara began baking together after Chris Jeremy was furloughed from his corporate job and Chris Joseph stepped away from his work as a flight attendant, according to Phoenix New Times. What started as a home-based operation grew into a popular booth at the Uptown Farmers Market before the couple opened their brick-and-mortar storefront on October 1, 2022.
That shop landed in Bethany Plaza, sharing the Uptown Phoenix commercial strip with longstanding neighbors like TexAZ Grill and The Whining Pig, per Mouth by Southwest. Inside, the owners decorated the walls themselves with gemstones for extra glimmer, and their charcuterie spreads were arranged in abstract geometric patterns drawing on mid-century modern design, the outlet's report noted.
Kindness Cakes and a 'Reverse Bakery' Model
Dos Chris' built its identity around the motto “Leave a little sparkle wherever you go!” and became known for four-inch “Kindness Cakes” frosted with messages like “You're worthy,” “You're enough,” and “You're beautiful,” the same report described. The shop offered baked goods and charcuterie alongside a weekly rotating cupcake flavor menu, per AZ Family's reporting.
Rather than opening early for morning customers, the bakery ran on a “reverse bakery” schedule, staying open from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday to catch afternoon and evening dessert seekers, the report noted. As recently as June, the shop was still engaging with local trends, joining other Phoenix bakeries in the viral “dot cake” craze with Pridefetti vanilla and gluten-friendly caramel options topped in dense sprinkle coatings.
A Wider Pattern Behind One Closure
The Barbaras' decision to step back mirrors broader strain across the food service industry. A 2026 survey of U.S. hospitality managers found that 47% reported personal burnout, while 64% said employees had quit specifically because of job burnout, according to OysterLink.
That pressure shows up in the numbers elsewhere too. A 2021 study cited by US Foods found that 60% of upscale restaurant servers have at least one diagnosed mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety. Federal data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, as referenced by ReachLink, ranks food service workers among the highest nationwide for job-related stress, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders compared with other occupational sectors.
For now, Dos Chris' customers can expect direct outreach if they have pending orders, and refunds are promised for anyone caught mid-transaction when the doors close Wednesday. The owners have not said what their next community role will look like, only that they intend to stay involved in some form.
