Battle Ground Lake's swim beach is currently under a public health advisory after tests revealed concerning levels of E. coli bacteria. The warning was issued by Clark County Public Health following routine testing, which, detected the bacteria known for causing nasty gastrointestinal issues.
Of the five samples taken this past Tuesday, only one showed elevated levels of the bacteria but that's enough to have officials waving red flags. Warning signs now adorn the lake, cautioning visitors against swimming or even sticking their toes in, especially the kids. After all, little Timmy's more likely to slurp up a mouthful of water than you are, and believe me, you don't want to deal with the aftermath of that.
Monday's got a new job now, and it isn't just curing the blues, it's when more water samples will be collected to see if this is a one-off or if the beach is more Full Metal Jacket than summer fun. The results could spell a return to normal or a full beach closure – let's hope it's not the latter. Folks looking to fish can still cast their lines, with a strong recommendation to not go all sushi chef with their catch – cook it well, or risk joining the E. coli party nobody wants an invite to.
Clark County Public Health's website makes it clear they aren't beach bums, they routinely check the water at three Christmas-card-worthy locations during the summer: Klineline Pond, Vancouver Lake, and, of course, Battle Ground Lake. So if you want an updated advisory status or a deep dive into fascinating beach bacteria facts, as per their website.
