It was a big win for civil service as Sophia Thompson, the Deputy Director of Social Services in Ramsey County, snagged the Social Worker of the Year Award from the National Association of Social Workers Minnesota Chapter. The award, no small feat, is handed out to those in the profession who go above and beyond, embodying the core values and achievements that set the bar in social work. Thompson's got her hands full overseeing the Mental Health division, but that hasn't stopped her from pushing the envelope in mental health service provision.
According to a recent announcement by Ramsey County, Thompson's leadership has been instrumental in the crossroads of mental health and the justice system. Committed to the community, she's at the helm of transforming the justice system, where wellness stands at the center. Her hands-on approach has led to significant strides, including the development of Mental Health Urgent Cares, designed for the Rule 20 population who often fell through the cracks of service provision.
The heart of Thompson's work is her unflinching commitment to the people. "Being tasked with mental health services for the county is a large undertaking that she does not shy away from and is always looking for the ways we can provide better services to our community members," the county highlighted. It's this drive and focus on collective well-being that has her peers and community leaders tipping their hats to her tire-some work that seems to never catch a break.
In receiving the Social Worker of the Year Award, Thompson has not only been recognized for her exceptional efforts but has also raised the standard for what’s possible when dedication meets need. She led her team with a vision for mental health support that rewrote the playbook, championing the introduction of the Mental Health Urgent Cares that cater specifically to those urgently in need of mental health services, suffering from a lack of timely care. For her, it's not just about bridging gaps; it's about fortifying a system in which the most vulnerable can find refuge and respite.
