Denton County has a new majordomo at the helm of its emergency operations. Samantha Taylor was officially named Director of the Office of Emergency Management, a move heralded by local officials as a boon for community safety and readiness during times of crisis. "We are excited to have her in this position as we know she will handle the responsibilities with the same dedication and commitment she has brought to her roles both in Denton and Ellis counties," Denton County Judge Eads said in a statement, as per the City of Denton, Texas.
Taylor's local roots and extensive experience in emergency management are expected to significantly benefit Denton County. Her career began in January 2023 with Denton County, but she quickly rose through the ranks by proving her mettle, especially while serving as Emergency Management Coordinator for Ellis County. During her tenure, she effectively managed to quickly become known for her response to disasters, including a tornado strike and the COVID-19 pandemic, where she successfully oversaw logistics like testing sites and vaccine distribution.
Her dedication to the field was further illustrated by her efforts in establishing a Hurricane Evacuation Information Reception Center in Ennis for Hurricane Laura evacuees. In her positions before joining Denton County, Taylor worked with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), managing various emergency preparedness groups and contributing to disaster response efforts.
Beyond her operational experience, Taylor is no stranger to leadership roles, actively participating in regional emergency management groups, serving as a Chair for the Emergency Management Working Group, and as a member of the Regional Emergency Preparedness Advisory Council (REPAC) at NCTCOG. She also has experience on nonprofit boards like the United Way of West Ellis County and has championed broader emergency readiness through statewide presentations on disaster preparedness.
Precinct commissioners have openly voiced their support for Taylor's appointment. "We are thrilled to have her on our team," said Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell, per the City of Denton, Texas. Precinct 1 Commissioner Ryan Williams pointed to her experience as an invaluable asset, while Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin W. Falconer welcomed Taylor's "wealth of knowledge." Precinct 4's Dianne Edmondson emphasized Taylor's experience as pivotal to enhancing local preparedness and response capabilities.
Upon accepting the appointment, Taylor expressed her commitment to the county. "I am honored to serve Denton County and our residents in this position and will do my utmost to ensure our team provides the best possible services from our Office of Emergency Management," Taylor said, as per the City of Denton, Texas. She's set to start her new role immediately, reinforcing the county's defense against disasters both anticipated and unforeseen.
