Two construction workers suffered serious injuries after a cherry picker malfunctioned and dropped them to the ground earlier today in San Antonio. The incident occurred near The Rim on the northwest side, where crews have been working through the night on a significant highway project along the 1604 access road and I-10.
Authorities at the scene detailed that the men were in the process of lifting two metal beams for attachment to concrete pillars when a chain gave way. According to KENS5, "The beam fell into a cherry picker, knocking it to the ground and pinning the workers." The San Antonio Police have not yet provided further specifics apart from the nature of the unfortunate event.
The injured were extricated by firefighters and rushed to a local hospital. Current reports put them in serious condition.
There is a heightened sense of anxiety at the construction site as another beam remains precariously suspended, posing an additional risk for workers. "Right now, there is another beam above the construction site that has workers concerned that it also might break and cause more injuries," as FOX San Antonio reported, indicating a potentially ongoing hazard.
