A 40-year-old man is facing charges after a collision with a San Antonio police cruiser on the Northwest Side, according to law enforcement. In the early hours of Monday, the suspect, identified as Juan Ybarra, rammed his black pickup into the police vehicle in a shopping center parking lot.

Police said the incident occurred around 6 a.m. in the 12700 block of Interstate 10, behind an IHOP restaurant. Ybarra, who had been waiting for an individual who failed to appear, told authorities he fell asleep at the wheel while under the influence. After leaving the IHOP, Ybarra attempted to navigate through the parking lot, ultimately crashing into the police unit.

The officer, who was on patrol in the lot, had assumed Ybarra would yield as he had the right of way. The collision took place near the shopping center's entrance, KSAT reported. Despite some pain, the officer involved in the crash was checked by EMS and is reportedly doing well.

In the aftermath of the crash, San Antonio Police discovered several types of narcotics in Ybarra's possession. Found with meth, cocaine, and marijuana, Ybarra was arrested for DWI and several narcotics-related charges. He will undergo a blood draw, confirmed by SAPD. At the time of the accident, Ybarra, who had been by himself in the vehicle, crashed into the cruiser and no other injuries were reported.

Details pertaining to the incident remain under investigation, and updates will be provided as they become available. For more information and updates, follow the link to the original KSAT article.
