Howard Reed, a 31-year-old San Lorenzo man, has been slapped with two counts of murder with special circumstances in the wake of a harrowing double homicide. According to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, victims Jingwei "Melanie" Zhang, 32, and Dorothy Mak, 38, were found shot dead at their Dermody Avenue residence around May 1.
After Zhang and Mak's worried families reported them missing on May 4, owing to a lack of communication since April 30, deputies discovered the victims' bodies in their shared home. Reed, who was nabbed by cops in Kansas, is now facing extradition back to California to appear in court for the crimes that shocked the local community.
The Sheriff's Office announcement on Facebook stated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety and that the investigation remains active, urging anyone with information to contact the lead investigators.
The authorities are, as per the announcement, "actively and diligently working in close collaboration with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office" to ensure justice prevails. At the same time, Reed prepares to return to California, where he'll face the grim legal music for the crimes that brutally ended two lives much too soon.
