In Scottsdale, a neighborhood's tranquil veneer was shattered by a coyote attack, resulting in wildlife officials euthanizing two of the creatures. According to a report by AZFamily, a dog walker became the latest victim when a coyote engaged in combat with their pet and subsequently nipped the owner in a residential area near Thomas and Hayden roads.
The situation escalated the previous day with Kale Carvalho experiencing a harrowing encounter when two coyotes chased after her pet dog along the Coronado Golf Course. "In my mind, I just thought, ‘Oh my God my dog is about to be killed right in front of me, nothing I can do about it,’” Carvalho recounted to AZFamily. Fortunately, the dog emerged from the ordeal unharmed thanks to the intervention of nearby residents.
These incidents have sparked an intervention by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, with Urban Wildlife Specialist Darren Julian noting the seasonal aggression of coyotes, “This is a time of year when coyotes have young pups and can exhibit aggressive behavior in defense of dens, especially towards domestic dogs," Julian stated to AZFamily. A den of coyote pups was found in the vicinity, heightening concerns for public safety.
While some residents like Tom Lesietre, and another neighbor named Ashley, have previously seen the coyotes as harmless fixtures during their golf course visits, the recent attack has altered perceptions, “They usually walk through, very nice coyotes," Lesietre said to Fox 10 Phoenix. “I've seen them here at least 30 times, and haven't felt threatened by them." The two adult coyotes thought to be responsible for the aggressive behavior have been captured and euthanized, their rabies test results are still pending.
As joggers like Zach Coleman express their concern, Arizona Game and Fish continues to urge the public to refrain from interacting with wildlife and to report any aggressive behavior.
