Chaos erupted in Lower Queen Anne as over 150 vehicles and an estimated 500 people participated in an illegal street takeover, echoing scenes closer to an action movie than real life in the Seattle neighborhood. According to FOX 13 Seattle, the unsanctioned showcase of drifting cars and thunderous engines plunged Elliott Avenue into a cloud of smoke and tire shrieks this past Saturday night. With the warmer months on the horizon, local authorities and residents fear this may be a precursor to a summer plagued by similar events.
As captured in a video, one car was seen performing donuts around an immobilized police car, while onlookers surged towards the spectacle, and one individual went so far as to kick the police cruiser—the law enforcement's presence eventually led to the crowd dispersing. "Man, somebody could've gotten killed. That's crazy," Isaac Ekin, the general manager of Queen Anne Beer Hall, adjacent to the bedlam, told KING 5. Ekin described the event as scary and chaotic, noting the uncharacteristic nature of such occurrences in the area.
No arrests were made or citations issued on the night of the turmoil, but the Seattle Police Department has an open investigation, mainly focused on locating the drivers who executed the donuts and the individual who assaulted the police vehicle. The police also acknowledged that these types of street racing takeovers have happened across the state and are not unfamiliar to the city, highlighting previous events, particularly in West Seattle.
The aftermath of Saturday’s event was visible days later, tire marks scarring the roads. A SPD spokesperson confirmed that the crowd broke up after the brazen donut stunt, with vehicles swiftly leaving the scene, leaving behind a substantial trail of disruption. Employees of nearby businesses expressed their shock to KOMO News, with Jessica Do remarking on the danger such actions posed to passersby. The Homewood Suites hotel manager reported access to their parking garage being blocked by the crowd and the drivers' antics.
