In a Massachusetts apartment, the convenience of a quick meal was disrupted by plumes of smoke when a Power XL air fryer went up in flames, prompting fire officials to issue a stark warning to consumers about the device already under safety recall. Shrewsbury firefighters were summoned to the scene after the air fryer started smoking uncontrollably, according to CBS News Boston. Responding teams found the appliance ablaze, but their swift action prevented the fire from spreading and no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) had previously issued a recall for the Power XL air fryer in December 2023, citing potential burn hazards. Despite the recall, it seems that risks continue with the now charred model adding to concerns. Upon extinguishing the fire and ventilating the building, firefighters notified the CPSC, urging them to reexamine the product to determine if additional recalls should be issued, WCVB reports.
Further stressing the gravity of the situation, the Shrewsbury Fire Department advised owners of the Power XL brand air fryers to cease using the appliance and to check the CPSC website for up-to-date recall information. "After an investigation, we determined that the air fryer brand was linked to numerous safety recalls," the Fire Department stated, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness for the potentially hazardous kitchen gadget.
The Shrewsbury Fire Department has since reinforced its request to the CPSC, pushing for a thorough analysis to ensure the safety of consumers who might, unknowingly be living with a fire hazard on their kitchen counter.
