FULTON COUNTY, GA — The dance floor was alive and kicking in South Fulton this month as seniors took center stage in celebration of Older Americans Month. Grooving to the beats, participants took part in "Come Dance Fulton Day," enjoying the spotlight and proving that age is just a number when it comes to having a good old-fashioned boogie.
Under a cobalt-blue sky studded with the occasional cotton-candy cloud, a plethora of dancing groups from around the South Fulton area assembled, creating a tapestry of movement and rhythm. Amongst them, notable guests included local legends Lily Legend and Ms. Mary Baker, who danced alongside the senior movers and shakers. As reported by the Fulton County's news release, Alexis Whitehead, Arts & Culture Director, highlighted the essence of the event, saying it’s all about "coming together dancing and having a great time."
The event’s significance transcended mere entertainment. Whitehead espoused the philosophy behind the collective sway, stating that it reflected "the collection of movement education, how we move through space as human beings." This ode to the joys of movement and fellowship was underscored by her emphasis on the need for such celebrations to honor the community’s elder statespersons, according to the Fulton County's news release.
Older Americans Month, observed annually in May, focuses on acknowledging the contributions of seniors across the nation. South Fulton honored this spirit with an event brimming with vitality, which, despite the participants' advancing years, left no soul untouched by the infectious enthusiasm of communal dance. As if the seniors were vying for the spotlight, a brown throng of dancers swirled on the floor, creating an atmosphere steeped in celebration and joyous camaraderie.
Fulton County officials hope that the success of this year's event will lead to more celebrations that honor the elder members of the community. With such a kickoff to Older Americans Month, it's clear that in Fulton County, getting older doesn't mean sitting on the sidelines—it means lacing up your dance shoes and showing everyone just how it's done.
