A violent confrontation escalated at Excel High School in South Boston, resulting in the arrest of one student who reportedly brandished a knife during a fight, as reported by the Boston Police Department and confirmed by school officials.
On Wednesday midday, tensions flared when four female students clashed outside a classroom, with two engaging in fisticuffs before one was thrown to the ground and allegedly drew a knife, slashing her opponent’s cheek, the skirmish continued with the armed student chasing the other up the stairs until a school safety officer intervened and seized the weapon, as described in a MassLive report. The injured student, who refused hospital treatment, had received a cut on her left cheek during the incident, something the Boston Globe detailed as a "scratch."
Nachelle Gordon, the principal at Excel High School, promptly enacted a 'safe mode' lockdown for the campus, lasting approximately 25 minutes, in the aftermath to ensure the school community’s safety; "Excel High School, like all schools in the Boston Public Schools, focuses on fostering a safe environment for every member of our community," Gordon expressed in a letter to parents and students, which was also quoted by the Boston Globe. Notably, students were encouraged to connect with the school social worker if they needed support following the unsettling events.
The underlying cause cited for the altercation appears to stem from a string of previous threats and confrontations, including a disturbing claim involving a gun being smuggled into the school, leading up to the fight, according to police, one girl involved in the knife incident claimed that she had been threatened by three other girls the previous day, they told her to "stay in a female’s place" and warned her of an impending fight that resulted in her purportedly drawing the knife in self-defense when they "began jumping her" — a different narrative from the victim, who suggested her attacker sneaked a firearm into the school in a separate incident as alleged in a MassLive report. Meanwhile, the Boston Public Schools spokesperson Max Baker has categorically denied the incident involving a gun at the school.
